I often hear people say that due to the requirements and restrictions of Keto, it is just too hard to get started. There are so many terms and concepts that it feels like you’re behind before you even fully accept the idea of a lifestyle change.
The best advice that I have to CONQUER this mindset is: START SLOW and KEEP IT SIMPLE. The best way to be successful is to be consistent, not perfect.
Five steps to shift your lifestyle
If jumping in head first is too much to grasp, here are FIVE STEPS that you can follow to work your way into a full lifestyle change:
Step 1: Cut out drinking pop/soda and juice. Simultaneously add more water into your routine.
Step 2: Add a serving of vegetables to every meal this week. They can be a side, added to eggs, added to a smoothie, or even eaten as a snack. Just get into the habit of eating green vegetables.
Step 3: Remove desserts. Do not eat any sugary treats – especially not anything labeled “sugar free.”
Step 4: Stop eating bread, rice, and potatoes. If this is too much at once, break this step down into two weeks. After cutting out these carbs, you should get into ketosis.
Step 5: Add healthy fats to your meals to help you feel full.
Quick tip
Determine the length of each step based on your comfort level and confidence. For example, if you have no problem cutting out soda and juice, maybe you’ll focus on that for 3 days and then move on to step 2. If it’s more difficult to add veggies to your meal routine, maybe that will be your focus for a whole week. Customize your journey to fit you.
Check your mental
Whatever way you choose to customize your start plan, write it down. This will help you to stay accountable and feel like you are more in control of the process than just winging it. Planning out your drinks and your meals is planning for success. Also remember that our goal is consistency, not perfection! If you slip up, just get back on track during the next meal. You don’t have to wait until the next day.
